An Iowa resident has died from a suspected case of Lassa fever after returning from West Africa. Lassa fever, an acute viral haemorrhagic illness spread by Mastomys rats, is endemic in several West African countries. Symptoms range from mild to severe, with complications including hearing loss and a high risk of miscarriage in pregnant women.
