Faizan Zaki from Texas won the 97th Scripps National Spelling Bee. The competition was held near Washington, D.C. Zaki won after spelling “éclaircissement” correctly. A rare rule saved Zaki from disqualification earlier in the final round. He had finished second in the previous year. Zaki is now among the few comeback champions in the Bee’s history.
